Throughout his legal career, Mr. Whelan has distinguished himself as a tough trial lawyer and a creative problem solver.
Since opening his own practice in 2001, Mr. Whelan has represented individual and corporate clients in state and federal court, utilizing creative legal solutions and cutting edge technology to provide his clients with the highest quality legal services. His diverse legal background allows him to serve his clients in a wide variety of practice areas in state and federal court.
Mr. Whelan began his legal career as a criminal prosecutor in San Diego, California. He obtained extensive trial experience, and distinguished himself as a tenacious trial attorney. Mr. Whelan later served as Deputy City Attorney for the City of San Diego and defended the City in numerous civil actions in state and federal court.
Mr. Whelan later joined a five-attorney plaintiffs’ litigation boutique, where he handled numerous complex tort and business cases, class actions and qui tam cases. In 1997, the firm recorded the largest jury verdict in California ($101 million).
Immediately prior to opening his own practice in 2001, Mr. Whelan served on the Products Liability and Litigation Management Team at McGuireWoods LLP. Mr. Whelan’s experience included hundreds of personal injury claims brought as class action cases in federal and state courts throughout Virginia, California and the District of Columbia.
Mr. Whelan is a 1983 graduate of Bishop Ireton High School in Alexandria, Virginia, a 1987 graduate of the College of William and Mary, and a 1992 graduate of California Western School of Law in San Diego, California.
Prior to law school, Mr. Whelan was a member of the U. S. High Diving Team, and regularly performed 100+ foot high dives and “fire dives” in stage and stunt shows throughout the US and Canada, including Magic Mountain in California, Astroworld in Texas and Sea Life Park in Hawaii.
